Liz and I took a trip to the magical wonderland of Yellowstone.

We saw so many bison on the road.

Then we started getting crazy. I mean come on, two girls alone in the wilderness. Of course we started to get a little weird.

I had a blast! Seriously!

Antelope Island is a thrill to go to. So close to Salt Lake City, why doesn't everyone go all the time?

My closest friends (missing a few of course) journeyed out to this mystical island, full of antelope and wild bison! We floated the Great Salt Lake (first timer right here) and had a great bbq and the most amazing chocolate cake (look below for pics).

Thanks friends for coming with me to celebrate me not being in my early 20's. Yes I was having a stressful "oh my word I'm old" type of day but you guys made it worth all the while.

Google+ deleted all my photos from what I posted on this blog and my families blog... Now I am spending hours doing the long process of trying to retrace my steps and bringing this blog back to life. Yeah I'm a little bit sick inside.
Maybe I shouldn't care, it's just a blog, and I know I am not a great blogger, but these are my memories and I am crushed that they will never fully be the same. I might just have to delete some posts that I have done because I won't remember what I actually posted.

This is my lessoned learned and it should be for you too.

Don't play with Google+. Don't even accept it when you get that special invitation. It isn't even that cool. Who needs circles anyways?

Art Trip: Day 2

Day 2 was camped at Scottsbluff, WY while our adventures of the day took us first to Chimney Rock then to Martins Cove.

Pioneers needed landmarks such as Chimney Rock to help guide them along their way.

Ever heard of "Wee Granny"? She was born as Mary Murray Murdoch but most people called her 'Wee Granny' because of her stature, at just 4'7". On the ill fated Martin Handcart Company, Mary, age 73, walked a long road to Zion but ended just short at Chimney Rock.

Her last words are still remembered because it shows her goals, dedication and commitment:

"Tell John I died with my face toward Zion."

Just up the road was Martins Cove. Devils Gate awaited us while we entered the doomed land where many pioneers lost their lives. Martin Handcart Company and the Willie Handcart Company are best known for starting too late on their trek to Utah and getting caught in a blizzard near Fort Laramie. This cove, now known as Martins Cove, was where those companies tried to keep shelter. Many perished but most survived because of an inspired rescue.

Brigham Young was informed that the Martin and Willie Handcart Companies were still on the trail. Astonished by the news, he called upon others for help to go out immediately. Both handcarts with found and rescued. Not to say many lost their lives.

John Chislett of the Willie Company wrote: Cold weather, scarcity of good, lassitude and fatigue from over-exertion, soon produced their effects. Our old and infirm people began to droop, and they no sooner lost their spirit and courage than death's stamp could be traced upon their features. Life went out as smoothly as a lamp ceases to burn when the oil is gone. Death was no long confined in its ravages to the old and infirm, but they young and naturally strong where among its victims. Men who were, so to speak, as strong as lions when we started on our journey, and who had been our best supports, were compelled to succumb to the grim monster. These men were worn down by hunger, scarcity of clothing and bedding, and too much labor in helping their families. It was surprising to an unmarried man to witness the devotion of men to their families and to their faith, under these trying circumstances. Many a father pulled his cart, and his little children on it, until the day preceding his death. I have seen some pull their carts in the morning, give out during the day, and die before the next morning...

If they didn't loose their lives, many were left handicapped from frostbite. No one paid a higher price to live in the West than these people.

Visiting these places gave me a new perspective on life. I was there were many perished or suffered greatly. Yet I do not suffer the same trials they went through. I have my own. Still, we both want the same thing. To came back to Zion.

I hope our last words or thoughts can be like Wee Granny: "Tell John I died with my face toward Zion."

Art Trip: Day 1

Follow the Mormon pioneer trail and the feelings that came are overwhelming. The sense of gathering is so apparent in their stories. So we, a small art group, gathered just like the pioneers so we can understand their hardest choices. Those types of choices where once a decision is made, life will never and can never be the same.

It was a truly inspired trip and I felt privileged to be able to be apart of it all.

This was the first place we set camp at. Lander, WY. Well Lander isn't a Mormon hotspot, the day was filled with shooting some videos of the Mormon trail at South Pass. This is the exact spot where the Pioneers chose to continue onto Utah instead of Oregon. In the dirt the deep ditches where their wagons passed are still very visible.

Later on that day we took a little hike in hopes to find some pioneer graves that haven't been seen in years. Their graves are barely marked with no other indication of where they are placed. The only thing that stands is a small fence around them. Even with all our eyes we couldn't find them.

We did however find the California trail.

These were taken in the small town of Lander, WY. They had great signs, great buildings even but it was like a ghost town. Nothing seemed to be open except for the local bar and of course Dairy Land Drive In.

Well the Royal Wedding was here and now it's gone but that doesn't mean my family wasn't recognized.

My sister being amazing and all, especially with her paper flowers (check out her work here, here, and here, and just all over her blog really) was creative enough and made the most amazing hat for the Royal Events.

Gene Davis is best known by far for his acrylic paintings of colorful vertical stripes. The paintings typically repeat particular colors to create a sense of rhythm and repetition with variations.

In 1972 Davis created Franklin's Footpath, which was at the time the world's largest artwork, by painting colorful stripes on the street in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

It is simply a masterpiece of color.

Rosemary

Martin Luther King Day

Martin Luther King Day was a good day.

First off the weather was wonderful. It almost felt like spring was just around the corner. I was just wearing a light (very very light) jacket.

We headed up the canyon to this amazing place.

The Midway Ice Castle.

A must see. I wish they were made out of ice cream but hey ice is still pretty cool.

The weather was so warm that part of the castles where closed to enter. That did not stop Jeannie from entering and risking her life.

Then we went to a little diner in Heber City called Chicks that had the most amazing scones. Oh man I want one right now.

Driving back through the canyon we decided to take a little walk on the lake. Well it was a warm day so it was scary to say that least. Once we saw how thin the ice really was we headed back to Provo. That did not stop so many other families from ice fishing or doing whatever.

Thank you day for a great adventure.

Patty Bartlett Sessions Blog

I chose to do a blog on my ancestor Patty Bartlett Sessions for my D&C class I am in. Our project was to do a creative project. Anything you wanted to do just needed to be a part of the D&C. I felt like Patty Sessions applied.

She was a midwife who did a great deal in our church history with her journal writings. She was a prevalent early member of the church and wrote much about the events happening to the church. Patty Sessions’s foremost legacy came through her role as a midwife. Her skill in delivering babies became critical to the well being of fellow members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Patty was a compulsive record keeper, having over 20 years of daily-recorded diaries. These diaries recorded the daily activities of the Latter Day Saints during the first year of the Mormon migration to Utah, and the earliest days of their settlement there. These diaries document the physical, social, and religious circumstances of the settlers, especially of the women. Her records are also a primary source of birth records in the LDS community during this period.

Reading these journals and other write ups about my ancestor Patty Sessions, I couldn’t help but do something about this amazing woman. She is truly a leader and someone that we should strive to become. She was diligent in the church, putting it first and having faith in its powers. She loved to serve her community, she organized a school called the Patty Sessions Academy, she was one of the first members of the Relief Society and she was a prominent member in society. Along with her other callings within the church and community she served as a midwife till she was 85 years old. She delivered nearly 4,000 babies throughout her life.

During World War I, the British and Americans faced a serious threat from German U-boats, which were sinking allied shipping at a dangerous rate. All attempts to camouflage ships at sea had failed, as the appearance of the sea and sky are always changing. Any color scheme that was concealing in one situation was conspicuous in others. A British artist and naval officer, Norman Wilkinson, promoted a new camouflage scheme. Instead of trying to conceal the ship, in a Cubism fashion, he simply broke up its lines and made it more difficult for the U-boat captain to determine the ship's course. The British called this camouflage scheme "Dazzle Painting." The Americans called it "Razzle Dazzle."

Artists were enlisted to draw up the camouflage designs. Early in the war, designs were drawn for individual ships, with each ship having its own distinctive pattern.

It would be amazing if these ships still existed today but I am so happy they once did. I can only image their amazement.

This is Halloween, This is...

How was my Halloween you might ask?

Well this is how it went:

At the end of September I had a Halloween decorating party. It needed to happen to get my in the mood for a great month to come. My house soon was engulfed with monsters, skulls, spooky trees, ghosts, wolves, wizard owls, bats, gravestones, zombie carrots (I know so scary right? You won't get it) and spiderwebs with spiders of course.

Then the glorious month of October came and I could not wait to go to a pumpkin patch, so I gathered my little gang and headed out for the perfect patch. We really didn't find it but we came to a pretty good one.

I was determined to get some adventure in my life so I made it a goal to do some Halloween adventure things this year. This list of amazing adventures includes going to a spooky church, a pumpkin patch dance in the middle of the night, dreaming of going to the Logan nunnery, watching Halloween movies (no gory ones please) and going through the haunted apple grove (I think I did more than that... I don't remember it all).

To keep the magical energy alive, my house held a Halloween party. It was on that Wednesday before the big holiday. We ate delicious treats, watched Halloween specials from our favorite TVs that we grew up on, and chatted to dear friends. Freaks and Geeks has such a good halloween special.

Friday the 29th was the day that I needed to make my costume. I was being Carmen Miranda. You know the real life Chiquita Banana lady. I bought fake fruit at Savers and found a big cone of styrofoam and made sure I had plenty of hot glue. It took me maybe 3 hours but the end results of my fruit hat was pretty amazing. I thought about bringing it to school on Monday because I was having an art critique and saying yes this is the art I did this weekend, but I didn't.

Heidi's house party was that night and was such a perfect Halloween party. Great food and friends and costumes, Joseph Smith even showed up.

On Saturday my friends were having an outrageous dance party. I went and was having way too much trouble trying to dance with my fruit hat. I ended up having people hold it while I danced. Problem solved.

Sunday, Halloween, I took a drive up the canyon with some friends and read a little out of a Ray Bradbury book because it fit so well with the mood. Then watched Freaks and Geeks Halloween special again (because it is that good) and then Hocus Pocus (duh).

October is gone now but I have such great memories of Halloween. I got into Halloween this year and I never really have and it was so worth it.

So that is how my Halloween was. Beat that.

This is the band First Aid Kit from Sweden. It is a duo with sisters Johanna and Klara.

My sister gets married this Friday. So exciting.

Everyday we are making paper flowers (mini ones, small ones, medium ones, big ones, extra extra large ones (you get my point) but a whole lot of them), painting banners, making more crafts, and coming up with new ideas everyday which we shouldn't because we already have too much that we have going and we might not be able to finish.

It is going to be a really fun, and different wedding. Special performance by some fabulously entertaining people.

Paul and Brittany got in last from being overseas. I finally will get my chance to hang out with my future brother-in-law before he takes my sister back to Denmark where they will stay for who knows how long and I never get to see my sister again. Maybe it will be a great excuse to visit. It is pretty funny though I don't know him at all.

Brand New Shoes

School is starting which means back to school shopping.

That was always the best. To go shopping for school but not be able to wear your new classy clothes until school started. I would just sit in my room and put on my new clothes and shoes and feel so cool. I would dream about when I would be able to wear them to school and how the new year would be.

Well this year I didn't go back to school shopping. I don't need clothes. I have a lot. I mean a lot. What I did need was new shoes. This hip replacement surgery has given me a new appreciation for treating my body better, at least my hip and my feet. So I looked up comfort shoes. Don't do it. It is a real sad sight. There are hundreds upon hundreds of ugly comfort shoes that are suppose to feel amazing on your feet yet make you look embarrassing.

What I was able to find were these dreamy shoes. Clark Desert Boot. They may seem too manly at first glance but this girl really pulls it off, with a little bit of confidence but mainly those tights and socks (that is a must).

So this new school year I am becoming her. This model. My Clark Desert Boots are going to become my new best friend, comforting my feet along with my hip. I will look just as cute as this girl and have fun wearing them too.

I hate to admit my flaws but blogging has been a struggle for me. I always thought that no one ever came on here. That is why I hardly ever post anything. I know that I am not the most popular blogger but I always thought it was strange that no one ever commented on my site. Little did I know that I needed to accept their comments. Tonight I just found all the comments I have been missing out on for the passed two years or more. Wow. Hah. It makes me laugh. I thought I was better with technology than I thought. But what is a girl to do. Thanks for the few comments that you have given me. I'll try to be up to date and maybe even post more because I know people sometimes look at my blog.

I am practically bed ridden for a month or two.

A Hip Party

Mark made an event for me for my going away. It's tonight.

"As you may have noticed in the past year Caitlin has been walking with a limp. Turns out this wasn't a hip hop lifestyle choice. Long story short our favorite valley girl is getting a hip replacement in a few weeks. She is leaving tuesday and will be gone for the summer as she rehabilitates her long slender legs at home in the OC.

Anyway, she wants to see all her dear friends before she gets cut open. Come pay your respects at a hip party complete with snacks, games (such as: pin the femur in the hip), hipsters, and possibly live music. It'll be the best FHE (Friendly Hip Evening) ever!"

All are invited. It's not a big thing. But if you feel inclined to come. It's tonight at my house at 8.

A Hip New Way of Life

Soon this will become a part of me.

I have known that I will be needing a new hip because of my hip dysplasia. It never really seemed reality that I would need to get one even though I have suffered with everything including walking. But reality is coming true. Dr. Dorr will be replacing my sad hip with this thing of beauty. Lasting 30 years, allowing me to do anything! YES!

It is a ceramic ball that goes into a metal socket that is covered with plastic.

On May 25 is my surgery.

Only 8 days till the big day.

I can't shave my legs for two weeks before my surgery.

Should I or should I not go to the beach to show off how amazing my legs look?
